As parents, we want our children to learn real life lessons that they can take with them as they grow. Schola de Vita recently held a “Marketing Day” for its Grade 1 to 3 students, where the children went to the Robinsons Supermarket in Las Pinas and were given a budget which they had to manage on their own. The activity was designed to teach the children about budgeting, addition, and also donating away goods. It was an amazing opportunity for these kids to apply the math concepts they learned in school in a real-life setting.
At Schola de Vita, learning isn’t limited to the four walls of a classroom. The school encourages students to explore and experience different things outside of the traditional school setting so they can gain valuable skills they can use later on in life. In this instance, it was shopping with a budget assigned by their teachers.
The children had an opportunity to explore the supermarket while also learning how to shop within their means. They got first-hand experience on how prices differ from one item to another and how it affects their overall budget. This practical life skill is something that most adults have already mastered but is often not taught in schools yet it is very important for everyday living. Not only did this activity teach the children how prices work but it also gave them an insight into community awareness, by donating some of their items away at the end of the day.
Not only are these activities fun and educational for children, but it also helps build confidence as well as independence as children learn how to manage money on their own without adult supervision or guidance. It’s also an excellent way for them to practice socializing with people outside of school as well as getting used to interacting with different kinds of personalities like store clerks or cashiers when buying items from stores or supermarkets.
